Foster Care Donation

I dropped off a donation to benefit the Clark Country (Nevada) Foster Care through their program Peggy's Attic. This program helps to provide emergency clothing and other supplies to children in the foster care system as well as items to at-risk families.

Items donated included 12 scarves and 8 hats.

The first donation of the year goes to a veteran's group, Vietnam Veteran's of America and their associated charities.

As well as a toaster oven, 5 sets of curtains and misc. clothing items, it included the following:

Goals for 2012

SnuggleWarmth Goals for 2012

After much thought I have come up goals that I can reasonable attain for this year. While I could not entirely have predicted our cross-country move, I need to be realistic enough to add some cushion room for events like this that can impede making my goal. With this in mind, I have changed the goals a bit.

Also, I am working with the realization that my hands are not quite up to par for marathon knitting, even with a loom. In finishing my last graduate classes, I need my hands in order to complete my courses online. Enough said, there is a lot of typing. It take a toll on the hands. Knitting does too. So, with this I have a compromise.

This year I will focus on total quantity of items donated, not just an arbitrary set quota of items.

For 2012, I would like to DONATE 250 items for charity. Not just knit them, but donate them. I would also like to expand the donated items to soaps, as they are something I can do without a lot of stress on my hands. Also, soap is of great need to shelters for in-shelter use as well as care packs. This is something I can do.

So, it will look like this.

Hopefully this will prove to be a a compromise for 2012. Of course, I would like to blow this number out of the water. We will see. But, this is my goal for 2012.

Final Stats for 2011

After taking some time off for the holidays and the start of my new class, I start a new year at SnuggleWarmth.

First, I will start with the bad. The scarf total for the year (see below) was well below the goal desired. Moving from one coast to (practically) another, had disastrous effects on the distribution come holiday time, as I just settled into our new home a couple of months before December. Add to this that I am in the middle of completing my final terms of graduate study (hopefully ending in late July), keeping up with SnuggleWarmth has been challenging.

However, and this is the good part, I am still continuing the effort into 2012, my third year! With the aid of a wonderful person I was able to barter for some hats this season and without her help, I would not have made the hat quota. We did though, and I am thankful! Thank you, S., you know who you are! Also, SnuggleWarmth was able, for the first time, to distribute soap to those in need.

It is not all so bad after all.

My next post will have the goals for this year. Stay tuned!

Just opened another box of scarves. Many of these include what I had knitted in the last few months, so of which I knitted en route to Vegas. The hats were generosity provided by a gal from one of my barter groups, Sue. Thank you, Sue for all the great hats!

Whew, I am still settling in my new digs. I can finally post that our move from DC to Vegas is complete. Yes, we finished our cross-country move. As I type this message, I am surrounded by boxes--Ah, moving.

I am still knitting. I inventoried all the scarf and hat boxes before I left. Now, I have to see what I have.

2011 Goals

OK, I took some much needed time off, but now it is time to get back to work. I thought long and hard about what goals I would like to make for SnuggleWarmth this year. Some factors I needed to include in the planning before I decided the yearly goals.

I *may* be moving this year. Not sure if, when or where, but this may happen, which will definitely affect SW's goals. The smallest move will be probably at least 1,000 miles to more than 5,000. Yes, 5,000 miles.

My commitments: I work full time and I attend graduate school half-time. It goes without say, both take a lot of time.

My hands: some times the quota and my hands are not in agreement. Knit-stress hands.

Taking these major things into the decision making process, I have opened myself up to plush/fleece scarves in addition to hand-knitted ones. One, I can make the fleece scarves in a variety of colors, including more masculine colors. Two, they would allow me to help with the quota without additional stress to my hands. I can also--in the event of moving--be able to make these in bulk before such move yet keep myself in line for achieving my goals. Also, the point of SW is to provide items to the needy in order for them to keep warm. I see no harm in introducing some fleece scarves to the mix. They are all hand-crafted.

That being said, I would like to accomplish the following goals:
200 scarves
50 hats
??? blankets, possibly some mittens too. The scarves and hats I want to keep the hard goal for. These two goals I would like to meet and exceed.

Well, the box is packed about as full as a large flat rate box can be. 15 scarves and 5 gloves are going to Catholic Social Services in Anchorage, AK. Again, as I mentioned in my previous post, they work with not only refugees but the homeless. Another box will be going to WI. More details soon.

First Donation Box of the Holiday Season

I neglected to take a photo of the box, but it was crammed full! I sent the following to Catholic Social Services in Anchorage, Alaska. Why Anchorage? Well, it is cold, that is for sure but there is another reason. I once lived in the area (actually, Eagle River) for 4 years, and I had volunteered with this organization, helping a refugee family learn English. This organization does all types of work not only with refugees, but also the homeless.

I sent them:
12 hand-knitted scarves
5 hand-knitted hats
5 new pairs of gloves - OK, these were not hand-knitted, but store bought. One of my buddies off a barter group I belong to traded with me for these. Thanks Sue!

I will probably send them another box in the next week or so!

I am giving away another alpaca scarf. This one will be one from my spring/fall line, nice and airy for wear with those spring tops. Great complement for the office or for weekend fun.

One catch, though, I would like at least 10 people entered before the drawing. We need at least this many people to hold a fair drawing.
